Lane Lyceum: The Termination of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, a documentary

Presented by Josephine Calzada, Chloe Crable, Emma Hua – Winners of the Massachusetts State History Project
May 26, 2024, 12:15 pm – 1:15 pm, in person at First Parish

This project is a 10-minute original documentary titled The Termination of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. The study was a turning point in the history of U.S. research and government policy. The film highlights both the causes of the horrific event, as well as the lasting effects on African American communities and U.S. legislature. The film will be shown, followed by time for questions and answers.

National History Day is a nationwide tiered high school and middle school history project competition. Students must do extensive research on a past historical event, person, or movement and create an original project that addresses this year’s theme: turning points in history.

About the presenters:
Josephine Calzada is a sophomore at Needham High School and a participant at UU Needham. She sings in an NHS a capella group, the Treble Rebels, and is the Student Council Cabinet Secretary. Additionally, she is a captain of the NHS girls’ ultimate frisbee team and has a black belt in taekwon do. Josephine enjoys playing the piano and acting in musicals, most recently, NHS’s production of Les Miserables. In her free time, Jo enjoys watching TV, crafting, and drawing.

Additionally, she enjoys playing the flute in and outside of the high school, volunteers with the Great Hall Concerts at the Needham town hall, and ballroom dances competitively. In her free time, Emma enjoys hanging out with friends, going to the gym, and playing with her dog.

Chloe Crable is a sophomore student at Needham High School. She is a captain of the NHS Mock Trial Team and is a court witness during their trials. Chloe enjoys participating as a cast member in the NHS theater productions and recently acted in the school’s production of Shakespeare in Love.
