Happy 200th to Us! A Who’s Who of the Founding of the American Unitarian Association

This year, Unitarian Universalists across the United States are celebrating the 200th anniversary of the founding of the American Unitarian Association (AUA). At the sixth annual Berry Street Conference on May 25, 1825, a group of Unitarian ministers voted to form an association that would help its members organize and evangelize the Unitarian faith. The American Unitarian Association was chartered the very next day, and is one of the two precursor organizations to the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), of which First Parish in Needham is a part. For this Lane Lyceum, Rev. Catie Scudera will offer a historical timeline and deep biographies of the “main players” of the AUA’s founding.  

The Reverend Catie Scudera began her ministry at First Parish in Needham in August 2014. She served as co-president of the Needham Interfaith Clergy Association from 2021-2024, and is a member of the Needham Resilience Network. In recent years, Rev. Catie has studied and shared Needham’s indigenous displacement and enslavement history in partnership with Dr. Gloria Greis (Needham History Center), leaders from the Natick Praying Indians, and other Needham community members and descendants. Prior to coming to Needham, Rev. Catie served as the intern minister of Boston’s Arlington Street Church; the student and summer minister of the Winchester Unitarian Society (MA); and, a student chaplain at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. She is a graduate of Harvard Divinity School (MDiv) and Carnegie Mellon University (BA).
