Democracy and Our Spiritual Fortitude

As we enter this new phase of US authoritarianism, we are each called to find a deeper place in the movement for true democracy. Inspired by Indigenous scholar and musician Dr. Lyla June, our guest preacher Claire Karl Müller will speak to UU Mass Action’s campaign invitations on climate justice, immigrant justice, housing justice, Indigenous justice, and decarceration — as well as the larger call to side with love for a version of our nation that liberates everyone and everything. Rev. Catie will serve as Claire Karl’s liturgist, and we’ll hear music from our First Parish Choir and our Elizabeth Duhig To The Fore guests, Caroline Drozdiak (violin) and our own assistant music director Chris Lockman.
Claire Karl B.W. Müller (they) is a force of nature. They are a 5th generation Germanic settler to Eastern Massachusetts and identify as a white, middle-class, non-binary, small-fat, neuro-spicy organizer. Their values are curiosity, compassion, truth and people power. They feel called to work with other white middle class folks for justice and joined the team at UU Mass Action in 2020.
They have organized for climate and environmental justice since 2007, winning victories to stop pipelines, transition coal fired power plants to solar, and build community. Claire Karl is coordinator of the statewide climate justice coalition Mass Power Forward, which they co-founded in 2015, as well as the UU Mass Action staff lead for the Indigenous Solidarity team and the Democracy team.
