Beauty and the Art of Encountering the Divine

Ever heard of “forest bathing?” It is the somatic and spiritual practice of immersing oneself in the life and serenity found in a forest.

This Sunday, February 23, we will be engaging in the spiritual practice of “Art Bathing.” This practice dives into the idea that we, human beings, encounter the Spark of the Divine/Spirit/God/Deep-Sense-of-Awe when we are in the presence of a work of art or engage in creating art. We all take in information in many different ways and as UUs we often get stuck on the cognitive, forgetting that our sense of sight, touch, sound, and smell all feed information into our bodies in important ways that touch our heart and soul.

Our service will challenge us to encounter the Divine in music, spoken word, paintings, and in the creation of art.* This service is for folks of all ages and promises to be engaging, uplifting, and fun.

*For our online congregants, there are two ways for you to participate in the embodied art bathing portion of this service: either through viewing and interacting with art, or through creation of art. If you choose to create art, please be sure to have your favorite art supplies handy. We encourage you to branch out and try paints, charcoal, modeling clay, cake decorating, knitting or any other creative endeavor that calls to you. Additionally, we will be having a ritual using chocolate during our Time for All Ages. Please have a piece of chocolate or other treat of your choosing ready for our service.
