AI and Learning—Why Keep Thinking?

Generative AI is swiftly and increasingly impacting the field of education, a notoriously glacial sector of society. Questions abound about the potential impacts of this technology on schools and on adolescent minds. What’s happening today in schools, and how can they best prepare for an AI-empowered tomorrow?  In this second of four sessions, we’ll examine the changes that we’re seeing in schools from administrators, teachers, and students, and discuss whether these moves are enhancing or detracting from the desired learning outcomes.

Nick Zufelt is an Instructor in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. Primarily teaching computer science, Nick regularly experiments with new techniques in the classroom, seeking to iteratively find effective new ways of teaching. This includes extensive re-envisioning of the Computer Science (CS) curriculum, co-directing the ethi{CS} project in the Tang Institute, and most recently efforts to understand and leverage generative AI in the classroom. Nick leads professional development efforts both on-campus and beyond, helping teachers and students to best incorporate ethical inquiry and utilize AI in their work. This includes co-founding the AI Co-Lab, a professional community of hundreds of educators from schools across the country who, each month, come together to explore new use cases of AI for students and teachers.
