Youth (ages 11-18)

The GangAbout our Youth Groups

If you are a young person in 6th grade through high school, (or the parent of a youth) you’ll find many opportunities available at First Parish to connect to a group of youth with similar values and experiences.

Our Sunday classes incYG 201lude a special curriculum for students in 6th-8th grade. Twice a month our Middle Schoolers are invited to join our Junior Youth Group (5:00-6:30 pm).

For our High School students we offer a weekly Senior Youth Group (7:00-8:30 pm) and a variety of special programs throughout the year.

Our cooperative school program for junior high youth runs most Sundays from September through June and is designed as a three-year series aimed at helping you explore issues of self and spirituality both deeply and broadly.

6th grade

Neighboring Faiths program kicks off this series by exposing youth to a number of other faith communities and includes field trips to a variety of places of worship to bring classroom learning and experience together.

7th grade

The seventh grade fall will then give you a stronger grounding in Unitarian Universalism, our history and heritage as well as our contemporary commitment to social action and mindful living. The second half of the year kicks off Our Whole Lives (OWL), a UU-grounded health and sexuality program.

8th grade

The first half of the 8th grade year you will complete the year-long OWL course. And finally, in the spring semester of your 8th grade, you’ll participate in our Coming of Age program – a unique opportunity to look more deeply at your identity, your practices and your beliefs, all within a group of both peers and adult mentors.

For more information about Sunday morning programs for youth, contact Mark LaPointe, Director of Religious Exploration.

Youth in the 6th through 8th grades are also welcome to join in our Junior Youth Group. The JYG meets approximately two times per month from 5:00-6:30pm on Sundays to socialize and interact through discussions, games, films and planned outings. Past activities have included bowling, snowboarding and a “Fear Factor” challenge.

High school aged youth (9th – 12th) are invited to participate in our Senior Youth Group. The SYG meets approximately three times per month from 7:00-8:30 pm on Sundays for check-in, conversation and activity. Topics and activities are chosen by the group and are designed to help provide a deeper opportunity to connect to community, explore issues of importance to teens, and come to understand and appreciate one’s self more fully. In addition, the SYG travels each year on a week-long service trip to places like New York and New Orleans. Youth members help plan the trip and fundraise to help cover the costs.
