The Global Refugee Crisis: Voices from Massachusetts
By Clark Taylor, Published on May 20, 2016
The Needham Area Immigration Justice Task Force and the Needham Human Rights Committee are sponsoring a forum that will address both the world refugee crisis and the experience of refugees already in Massachusetts. We will learn what we can do to help such refugees resettle in our state in as welcoming a way as possible.
The forum will take place on Wednesday, June 1, at the Center in the Heights (Senior Center) at 7:30 p.m. The main speaker will be Melissa Khurma, a Jordanian who brings first-hand understanding of the crisis. She will be accompanied by two refugees who have settled in our state who will tell their stories. Khurma is a candidate for a Masters of Public Administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Her topics will include:
- Current status of the crisis
- Socio-economic impact on frontline states
- International community response
- Future challenges and community opportunities
The forum is free and open to the public.
Those of us at the First Parish annual meeting heard Will Rico and Si Si Goneconto speak in a compelling way about the possibility of forming a refugee ministry in the church. The forum provides an excellent opportunity to get the contextual understanding for their proposal.
