On Sunday, October 25th outgoing Youth Program Coordinator, Sophie Hadingham will say farewell to the junior and senior youth groups as she leaves her position with First Parish to pursue an exciting new professional opportunity that just didn’t leave her with enough time to keep working here. Although excited about her new position with a legal organization that advocates for people with mental illnesses, Sophie has said that she felt very much a part of this congregation and will miss working with the youth.

In a note to parents, Sophie wrote, “I appreciated the opportunity of getting to know your children who are all bright, hilarious, and amazing young people. I’ve learned a lot about UU values and working with youth from this experience and from your church community.”

While we will miss Sophie’s enthusiasm and creativity, we send her off feeling blessed by the gifts she shared in her short time here and with a sincere wish that she will be happy and successful in her new role.

Catie, Mark, the Parish Committee and the Youth are all happy (and relieved) to announce that the Youth Programs Coordinator position will not be empty for long! Also on the 25th, Sophie will help the youth groups to welcome in our own Assistant Music Director, Kate Loftus-Campe (pictured right) as our Acting YPC for the church school year.

Far from being just a simple solution to this unexpected absence, Kate is a wonderful choice for this role.  With multiple pertinent degrees; a long history of working with youth; hands on experience with our specific youth groups over the past 5+ years (including planning and leading last year’s service trip to New Orleans); and a deep connection with and love for this congregation, Kate is extremely well-suited for this position.

Kate will continue to wear her music hat, working with the Song Squad and UU Ringers as she’s been doing.  Her gifts to the music program are invaluable.  In the spring, during the typical hiring season for church positions, Kate will work with church leadership, staff, parents and youth to select a new, permanent (and hopefully long-term) Youth Program Coordinator.

We hope you’ll join us all in welcoming Kate to this new and important role.

In peace,

Mark LaPointe
Director of Lifespan Religious Exploration
